BrightSpring Publishes Study on COVID-19 Mitigation in Assisted Living Facilities

BrightSpring has published “Home-Based Primary Care Led-Outbreak Mitigation in Assisted Living Facilities in the First One Hundred Days of COVID-19” in the Journal of the American Medical Directors Association, a leading journal for long-term care and post-acute care professionals. The study describes how our COVID-19 mitigation methods used in our home-based primary care practice also reduced the spread of the infection in assisted living facilities (ALF).

Residents of congregate care settings have been severely impacted by COVID-19 pandemic. BrightSpring’s home-based primary care group provides visiting medical care to 1,794 residents in 101 ALFs in Ohio. Shortly after the first COVID-19 case was reported in the U.S., a cross-functional team at BrightSpring Health Services (BHS), comprised of medical, clinical, compliance, risk management, human resources, legal, communications, and operations leaders, assembled to create an outbreak committee to develop and deploy a comprehensive prevention and suppression strategy to implement across the company.

“There is great value to having a diverse team and enhanced technology ready and be able to provide optimal care and vigilant infection control to this vulnerable population during the pandemic,” said Dr. William Mills, lead author and BHS Chief Medical Officer. “All congregate living settings pose challenges for infection control of COVID-19, however, vigilant control procedures, careful documentation, and real-time data analysis enabled the safety of our patients, clients, senior living communities and referral partners. We’re eager to share our best practices to benefit all of those in the assisted living facility industry.”
