Rehab Without Walls Occupational Therapist Amnee Barakat and Music Therapist Cynthia Rael have been Working Smart and Doing Good in San Antonio, TX.
In July 2023, Amnee and Cynthia’s patient Gavin sustained a traumatic brain injury (TBI) at just 17 years old. One of the more challenging aspects of his recovery has been overcoming motor planning deficits, a common complication of brain injuries that impedes his ability to complete everyday tasks.
Amnee recognized the need for a different approach to his treatment and brought this up during a monthly conference with Gavin’s family and other therapists. That was when Cynthia suggested co-treatment, using music as a tool to unlock Gavin’s potential.
One task Gavin struggled with was putting on his ankle foot orthosis (AFO). To implement the new treatment strategy, Amnee highlighted the step-by-step process Gavin needed to remember while Cynthia observed. Cynthia then created a simple, catchy song that could guide Gavin through each step in a memorable and engaging way. After a few practice runs, Gavin went from needing complete assistance with his AFO to putting it on independently. Amnee and Cynthia have since applied this technique to other aspects of Gavin’s recovery.
Amnee and Cynthia, your Communication and willingness to collaborate across disciplines not only keeps everyone in the know but allows you to provide more effective care. Thank you for working to empower your patients, helping them live their best lives.
WORK SMART. DO GOOD.
