ResCare Community Living Residential Manager Cira Melendez has been Working Smart and Doing Good in Ocala, FL.
Cira is one of three winners of this year’s LEGACY of Care Caregiver of the Year award. She forms relationships with the individuals that allow her to provide person-centered supports help them reach their goals.
When one of her clients learned that his brother was moving away, he became inconsolable. Cira jumped into action and found an adaptive headset that enabled him to maintain and further build upon their relationship. The individual was able to speak to his brother independently at any time, which had a profound impact on his quality of life.
Cira is also responsible for making sure a different client was able to see his mother before she passed away. She drove him several hours so he could visit her one last time and say goodbye. Cira’s willingness to go above and beyond for him helped the individual process the situation and feel a sense of closure.
A third client experienced depression after moving into the home but had difficulty communicating his pain. Cira remembered a brief moment when this individual’s mother mentioned his love for being outside and playing the keyboard. After she got a keyboard and found a peaceful spot outside, the client’s attitude changed. He began to feel more relaxed in the home and has continued to play the keyboard daily.
