Community Living Direct Support Professional (DSP) Robert Penn is Working Smart and Doing Good in Beckley, West Virginia.
Robert works in a home supporting individuals with behavioral challenges and developmental disabilities. Instead of focusing on an individual’s non-preferred behaviors, Robert asks the men questions and gets to know their likes and dislikes. He encourages their interests by taking the men fishing and even leading them on Dungeons and Dragons quests simply because they enjoy it.
“Robert provides a safe Environment where everyone feels comfortable in sharing their thoughts, feelings, and opinions,” said Human Resource Specialist Rachel Belcher. “His sincerity becomes especially meaningful for the more challenging men he supports. When they know they are cared for and valued, their sense of self-worth improves and their quality of life increases substantially.”
