ResCare Community Living Direct Support Professional Janet Nicholson has been Working Smart and Doing Good in Upper Marlboro, MD.
Janet actively involves the people she supports in choosing their community outings by engaging them in conversation and providing education. Through this approach, she tailors activities to client needs and preferences, fostering meaningful community integration. She demonstrates patience, flexibility and problem-solving skills when clients are hesitant to participate, which helps reduce social barriers and build confidence.
To encourage autonomy, Janet reminds clients of upcoming outings the day before and again the morning of, and she invites them to help prepare their own lunches when appropriate. By shifting the support model from dependency to empowerment, she has created more opportunities for independence and self-advocacy. As a result of her efforts, one client has significantly improved his writing skills by practicing his name and working with numbers. He now applies these skills in real-life settings, such as shopping and other community activities, further strengthening his independence and confidence.
