ResCare Community Living Area Supervisor Gabriel Maier has been Working Smart and Doing Good in Johnson Creek, WI.
When a new client came to live at the house where Gabby works, it took time for him to adjust. He had a feeding tube, would often hit or push staff, and refused his g-tube nourishment. Gabby began attempting different approaches, such as observing his surroundings and reading his facial expressions to find his likes and dislikes and help him feel safe.
Now, the client engages happily with staff during feedings. If he does refuse, Gabby has instructed staff to reapproach after assessing his environment, ensuring the mood is right. Every feeding is successful now, and he has learned self-advocacy.
Another one of Gabby’s clients is blind, and as she ages has also begun to lose her hearing. This has made it difficult for the client to enjoy her spiritual pursuits like listening to gospel music, reading her Bible, and praying. Gabby reached out to a local pastor and arranged for them to visit monthly to give the client and others who choose to join a service that includes scripture, music, and prayers.
Thank you, Gabby. Your emphasis on inclusion through Communication demonstrates innovation and creative problem solving. By overcoming barriers and bringing people together, you help the people you support live their best lives.
WORK SMART. DO GOOD.
