ResCare Community Living Direct Support Professional Tiffany Platt has been Working Smart and Doing Good in Hickory, NC.
Tiffany transferred to the 8th Avenue group home in April and supports three clients, two of whom are non-verbal and one who is able to communicate verbally. One of the non-verbal individuals has always had his own style of sign language, despite his mother trying to teach him American Sign Language (ASL) as a child.
Tiffany is fluent in ASL, and upon arriving at the home, she began to take extra time to work with this client each shift. She was patient as he learned the language, which gradually helped him to better communicate his needs and cope with frustrations. Over time, they began to hold full conversations, and he is always excited to share the new words and skills he has learned with others.
After expanding his vocabulary, this individual is now able to operate the washer and dryer independently, only asking for minimal assistance. His ability to communicate has also made him more productive when he goes into the community for volunteer hours. He works at the Safe Harbor Consignment Store three days per week and looks forward to talking with others who know ASL.
Tiffany, your positive Attitude allows you to see the possibilities in others. You demonstrate compassion and dedication through your work, supporting each person as they make progress towards their goals. Thank you for helping your individuals live their best lives.
WORK SMART. DO GOOD.
