This week, we celebrate all of our dedicated direct support workers during Direct Support Professional Recognition Week. One of these employees is ResCare Community Living Direct Support Professional Yu’noka Newton, who has been Working Smart and Doing Good in Tucson, AZ.
Yu’noka prioritizes her relationships with the clients, taking time to sit with them, have meaningful conversations, and show that she values their opinions. Individuals feel safe around her, often asking for Yu’noka by name when they have an issue. Many even refer to her as “Aunt.”
When Yu’noka noticed that her nonverbal clients got frustrated if they were unable to communicate their wants and needs, she got to work. She created a schedule with pictures so that they can pick and choose how they will start their day and the activities they would like to do. This has increased the clients’ independence, and they enjoy their newfound freedom to make these decisions for themselves.
Yu’noka goes above and beyond to make sure her individuals receive a high quality of care, advocating for clients when needed and mentoring new staff members as they settle into their roles and work on building relationships with the individuals.
Thank you, Yu’noka. Your Leadership within your home prioritizes the well-being of your clients. You go above and beyond to ensure everyone’s needs are met, helping both your coworkers and the individuals you support live their best lives.
